Performer Information

Paul K. Humiston began his bassoon studies with William Allgood of Western Michigan University, and continued with Homer Pence at Ball State University while pursuing his degree in architecture. In addition to being a licensed architect, he has been active as a performer on the Thursday Musical Artist Series and with various Twin Cities orchestras including the Mississippi Valley Orchestra, where he was twice a featured soloist, Symphony of the Lakes and Allegro Sinfonia. Since 2009 he has served as principal bassoonist and executive director of the Wayzata Symphony Orchestra. Paul also does some work as a freelance musician and particularly enjoys playing chamber music.

Dr. Marion Judish is Professor of Violin and Viola at St. Cloud State University, and has held this position for twenty-eight years. She received her Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Minnesota, and studied chamber music performance at the Juilliard School of Music. An avid performer, Marion has performed on Minnesota Public Radio, and in recitals throughout Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, Wisconsin, Colorado, Wyoming, Chicago, and New York City. She has also concertized in Sweden, Germany, France and the U.K. She has appeared as soloist with several orchestras, including the Denver Symphony, the St. Cloud Symphony, Northwest Symphony and Amadeus Chamber Symphony. Marion is concertmaster for the Wayzata Symphony, Amadeus Chamber Players, and the St. Cloud Symphony.

Judish holds the record of receiving three consecutive W. Fiske Scholarship awards at the University of Colorado during her undergraduate studies. This was the most prestigious award to be given.

Sue Ruby, NCTM, received her MM in piano pedagogy emphasis from Columbus State University (GA) where she studied with John O'Brien. Additionally, she graduated summa cum laude with a BME, piano pedagogy from the University of MN-Duluth. Ms. Ruby has been on the faculty of the MacPhail Center for Music since 2001 where she teaches private and group piano, and co-teaches singer-actor performance labs. She is an active member of Phi Beta Kappa and MMTA, and also the co-founder of the Association of Professional Piano Instructors (APPI). In 2011, Ms. Ruby co-created Fridays in the Valley, a chamber music series that raises money for charity.

Lynn Shackelford received her musical training at the American Conservatory in Chicago, Ohio Wesleyan University and Cleveland Institute of Music. She has served on the Frederic Chopin and American Guild of Organists Boards and sang in the Plymouth Festival Chorus (now VocalEssence) for twelve years. Presently she is a freelance organist and teaches piano in her home in Bloomington.

Ann Buran, piano, throughout her career, has collaborated with singers, violinists, and other instrumentalists, in addition to performing classical music concerts on the marimba and serving as a church organist. She continues to play at Whittier School on Tuesday mornings and helps out at VocalEssence and MacPhail Center for Music when she can. Piano playing with Lynn Shackelford has been a special enjoyment for many years.

Mezzo-Soprano April Hanson has appeared most recently as Maurya in Riders to the Sea at the MN Fringe Festival. She also has performed in the University of Minnesota’s productions L’incornazione di Poppea as Arnalta, Suor Angelica as Principessa, Street Scene as Emma Jones, Le Nozze di Figaro as Marcellina, Turn of the Screw as Mrs. Grose and Gianni Schicchi as Zita, Iolanthe as the Fairy Queen with the Gilbert and Sullivan Light Opera Company, and Margot in SkyLark’s production of The Vagabond King. In concert, Hanson has performed as mezzo soloist in the Mozart Requiem with the University of Minnesota’s Orchestra, Handel’s Messiah with the Dakota Valley Symphony and performed Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater. Also, as a young artist with Pine Mountain Music Festival, Hanson covered the role of Dame Quickly in Falstaff and performed the role of Mama Lucia in Cavelleria Rusticana.
