Josey Poppin, mezzo-soprano
Young Artist Scholarship Competition Winner 2018
Josey Poppin first began singing at a young age in choirs and church programs. She developed a passion for singing during high school and decided to pursue a career in music from there. Josey holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Northwestern- St. Paul, studying under Richard Joseph. Here she participated in the Women’s Chorale, Northwestern Choir, and several musical theater productions, including The Phantom of the Opera and Mary Poppins as the Bird Woman. She is currently employed teaching general music at Turtle Lake Elementary School, and she plans to pursue a master’s degree in Vocal Performance next fall.
A winner of the Thursday Musical Young Artist Competition, Josey has also placed first in the NATS Minnesota Chapter Competition, first in the University of Northwestern’s Concerto/Aria Competition, and second in Schubert Club Scholarship Competition. As an avid lover for chorale music, she is also currently employed as a member of the Minnesota Chorale and enjoys singing in her church choir.
Carolyn Diamond, organ
Active as both pianist and pipe organist, Carolyn Diamond performs regularly on concert series and in salon settings. As a recitalist, she has been praised for her buoyant style and interpretive vigor, and has the reputation of delivering passionate and colorful performances. Selections from her CD of piano music, SCANDINAVIAN SUITE, have been played on Minnesota Public Radio/American Public Media.
Diamond has been a frequent performer at the TCU/Van Cliburn Piano Institute in Texas where she was a winner of their Piano Concerto Competition, performing with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.
Having been a church musician since high school, she has served large congregations as Director of Music/ Organist, and most recently as Staff Musician at Central Lutheran Church (2001-2016). Currently she is a regularly featured musician at Wayzata Community Church.
She is active as a performing member of the American Guild of Organists (has served the on the Executive Board of the TCAGO), Friday Club, and is an Artist Member of Thursday Musical. She has worked with the American Symphony Orchestra and was a performer with the National Arts Club in New York City.
A Valedictorian from Robbinsdale High School, she went on to receive her B.A. degree (with highest distinction) from the University of Minnesota where she studied piano with Bernard Weiser and organ with Heinrich Fleischer. Postgraduate work includes keyboard studies with Howard Don Small, Dean Billmeyer at the University of Minnesota, Kent Tritle of the Juilliard School, and Igor Resnianski of Westchester University. A winner of the Young Artist Competition, she was also a recipient of the Dimitri Metropolous Scholarship.
Kristine West Denton has performed across the country, in Canada, and Germany as a soloist and collaborative pianist. She recently retired from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Previously, she taught at Grinnell College, Coe College and Fort Hays State University.
She was a frequent soloist with the Erie Philharmonic and played keyboards for the Erie Philharmonic, Erie Chamber Orchestra and the Bemus Bay Pops. She performed on live broadcasts from WKSU (Kent, OH), WCLV (Cleveland) and WQLN (Erie) in collaborative performances. She administered and performed in a free concert series at the Erie County Public Library and served on the Arts Council of Erie.
A concert review from the Badische Zeitung (Freiburg, Germany) called her “an excellent soloist and an intelligent and sensitive accompanist” while a recipient of a Collaborative Fulbright Grant.
She attended the vocal accompanying program at the Music Academy of the West and the vocal and instrumental programs of the Blossom Festival School, studying with Martin Katz, Warren Jones and Cleveland Orchestra members.

Hsin-Yin (Cindy) Min, is a native of Taipei, Taiwan. Miss Min started to play the violin at age of seven, and was awarded the 1st prize in the Taipei City Violin Competition in Youth Division 1993. Miss Min received a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from the Taipei Municipal University of Education and was a regular performing violinist of several television broadcast shows. In 2007, Hsin-Yin was awarded scholarships to attend the Boston Conservatory where she received her Master's Degree in Violin Performance to study with Professor Lynn Chang. Miss Min was offered fellowships to study with Professor Young-Nam Kim at the University of Minnesota for Doctoral of Musical Arts in Violin Performance in 2011. Hsin-Yin has been a regular substitute musician to perform with the Boston Civic Symphony, Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra, Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra, and Minnesota Orchestra. Hsin-Yin is currently the principal second violin of the Southwest Minnesota Orchestra and the violin instructor of Yinghua Academy Conservatory of Music.
Te-Chiang (Bacco) Liu, is a native of Taiwan. Mr. Liu started the violin at age of six, and was awarded the top prize at the Taiwan National Violin Competition in the Youth Division in 1996. Mr. Liu was accepted by the Queensland Conservatorium in Australia to study with renowned Australian Teacher, Carmel Kaine and won all Violin Prizes for two consecutive years. Te-Chiang received a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance with Honor from Shih-Chien University, and was selected to be the Concertmaster for the National Defense Symphony Orchestra where he performed several state banquets for the President of Taiwan. Te-Chiang was offered full scholarships to attend the Boston Conservatory where he received a Masters Degree to study with Professor Lynn Chang in Violin Performance in 2009. Te-Chiang has been the Concertmaster at numerous orchestra and chamber concerts at the Boston Conservatory and has participated in a collaborative performance with renowned artist Yo-Yo Ma and Lynn Chang, where he was selected to lead the Hememway String Chamber Ensemble in 2009.
Mr. Liu came to the University of Minnesota for a Doctoral of Music Arts degree and to study with Professor Young-Nam Kim with a full scholarship. Te-Chiang has been a soloist with various orchestras in Taiwan, Australia and the United States. He was also invited to perform in Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany and U.S throughout the years. In addition, Te-Chiang has been an enthusiastic orchestral musician. He was invited to attend Tanglewood Music Festival in 2009 to work closely and perform with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Te-Chiang is currently the Concertmaster of the Kenwood Symphony Orchestra, Southwest Minnesota Symphony, and also a substitute musician for both Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra. He also teaches as a member of the Violin/Viola Faculty at MacPhail Center for Music and Southwest Minnesota State University.
Kelsey Farr, a native of Eden Prairie, MN, found her love for the viola at the age of 8 while playing with the Eden Prairie String Academy. She continued her studies with various members of the Minnesota Orchestra, including Aaron Janse and Richard Marshall. Kelsey distinguished herself as principal viola in the Minnesota Youth Symphonies and the Greater Twin Cities Youth Orchestra. After studying for six years at the Eastman School of Music, she earned her BM and MM in viola performance under the direction of Professor George Taylor. During her time in Rochester, NY, she distinguished herself in the Ying Quartet's chamber music program, and performed with the Eastman String Quartet at President Obama's second Inaugural Luncheon in Washington DC. Her enrollment in the Orchestral Studies Diploma Program led to her participation with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom she performed for five years. She has also appeared with the Binghamton Philharmonic, Erie Philharmonic, and Symphoria of Syracuse. Kelsey has relished her performances with Michael Bublé, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Sarah McLachlan, Amy Grant, and Ben Folds.
In addition to maintaining her twenty-year relationship with the Eden Prairie String Academy through teaching and performing, Kelsey has developed a private violin and viola teaching studio through the Schmitt Music company in Woodbury, MN. She is a full-time member of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, and performs with the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and the Lacrosse Symphony Orchestra. As the newest member of the Meadowlark String Quartet, she is excited to bring a fresh and new perspective to the violist chair.
Cellist Lindsay Schlemmer completed her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Cello Performance in 2018 and was a Berneking Fellow at the University of Minnesota where she studied under the guidance of Tanya Remenikova. In addition to giving solo recitals, she was featured performing the Prelude to Reger’s Solo Suite No. 3, on a live broadcast on Minnesota Public Radio in April 2016 as a part of Before Bach’s Birthday Bash concert series, and has soloed with the Southwest Minnesota Orchestra, and the Illinois Wesleyan Civic Orchestra.
Lindsay is a founding member of the Meadowlark String Quartet. She performs in a variety of concert settings from classrooms to public libraries, and the more traditional concert hall. Lindsay was Principal Cellist of the Southwest Minnesota Orchestra (2013-18,) and is a substitute for the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra, Heartland Symphony, and Sioux City Symphony.
In addition, Lindsay teaches at the University of Minnesota Morris, and is the Executive Director and Cello Faculty for the Saint Mary’s University String Festival. She also teaches a full private studio from her home in South Minneapolis. Lindsay loves teaching students with a wide range of ages and backgrounds because she is amazed by the diversity of how each person learns and is inspired by music.
