Young Artist Scholarship Competition Winner 2018

Tessa Larson is a soprano from Stillwater, Minnesota. Ms. Larson is in her third year of study in vocal performance at Concordia College. She performs in the chorus of the Fargo Moorhead Opera in shows including Die Fledermaus, and Die Zauberflöte. She has performed as Isabelle in Pirates of Penzance with the Fargo Moorhead Opera and as Ida in a Concordia Opera production of Die Fledermaus.

In 2018 Ms. Larson won the Thursday Musical Young Artist Competition in her division. She has also participated in the Brancaleoni International Music Festival where she performed in opera scenes as well as in the chorus of L’Elisir D’Amore.

Previous to her time at Concordia College she was an apprentice with Project Opera at Minnesota Opera. She performed as the Nurse in the world premiere of Memory Boy by Reinaldo Moya while in Project Opera. She also performed in the chorus of Rusalka with the Minnesota Opera. This year Ms. Larson will perform the role of Lady Blembly in Jorge Martin’s Tobermory. She also looks forward to performing in the chorus of Carmen this spring.

A native of Fresno, California, Matthew Harikian holds a B.M. in Piano Performance from St. Olaf College and is currently pursuing Master's degrees at the University of Minnesota in both Piano Performance and Music Theory. Public performances have included solo recitals in Fresno and Turlock, CA as well as concerto appearances with the St. Olaf College and Lompoc Pops orchestras. Matthew most recently participated in Pianofest in the Hamptons, a prestigious summer festival in East Hampton, NY, performing and studying with other international pianists. Sharing an equal interest in both performance and academia, Matthew hopes for his future career to include teaching and researching in the field of music theory while also performing both solo and chamber music. Matthew currently studies with Lydia Artymiw.

Cellist Nickolai Kolarov graduated from the Bulgarian State Academy of Music and received his Master’s degree from the University of Missouri, Kansas City where he studied with Nina Gordon. Kolarov earned his Doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota where he studied with Tanya Remenikova. He also studied with Igor Gavrish from the Moscow Conservatory of Music. Since his arrival in the United States he has performed with distinguished musicians in both classical and contemporary repertoire throughout the country. Kolarov is a prizewinner from the Bulgarian National Competition at Provadia. He has received numerous grants from the Minnesota Metropolitan Regional Arts Council and American Composers Forum, as well the Fine Arts and Humanities Grant from St. Thomas University where he taught cello until 2006. Kolarov performed on the conference of the National Association of Composers (NACUSA) in San Marcos, Texas in 2008. He also performed at the 2010 Composer Conference of the Aspen Institute. In 2011 he was invited for a performance-lecture at the Juilliard School. Kolarov is the founder of the Balkanicus Balkan new chamber music concert series in 2003 in the Twin Cities, MN and the Artistic Director of Balkanicus Ensemble. The series has featured music written especially for him and for the ensemble. Kolarov is the President of the Balkanicus Institute for Balkan Art, Culture and History, a not-for-profit organization that promotes the culture of the Balkans.

Pianist Jill Dawe plays a wide range of chamber music, solo, and concerto repertoire has a particular affinity for new music and interdisciplinary collaboration.  Her recent performances include concerto engagements with the Minnesota Philharmonic, Heartland Symphony and St. Paul Jewish Community Orchestra; solo recitals at the Chautauqua Institution, and Piano By Nature Series; a collaboration with Ballet of the Dolls; and a variety of chamber music concerts. 

Dr. Dawe is a native of Newfoundland, Canada and a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York.  She is currently an Associate Professor of music at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and she has also taught on the faculties of Lenoir-Rhyne College in North Carolina; Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio; and at the Chautauqua Institution, Chautauqua, New York.

Kate Lamb, soprano, is enjoying her fourth season as a performing artist with Thursday Musical. Originally from Plymouth, Minnesota she earned her Bachelor of Art in Music from Luther College and now regularly performs in the thriving art scene of Minneapolis. Previous engagements include the world premiere of Nicholas J. White's On Outbreak for New Ruckus, as well as additional premieres for Opera On Tap & Composer Quest's New Composition programs. Kate also has sung with the Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company, Minnesota Chorale, The Singers-Minnesota Choral Artists, Luther College Nordic Choir and the St. Cloud Concert Choir. In addition to singing, Kate works as a speech-language pathologist in the public schools.
