MINNEAPOLIS/ST PAUL - Thursday Musical announces its 125th season for the Thursday Morning Artist Series, including Living Concert Notes with MPR announcer Steve Staruch and composer David Evan Thomas, and the Home Programs.
HOME PROGRAMS
A time-honored tradition, the Home Programs are the heart of the organization’s membership community. Members of Thursday Musical on October 20, 2016 and April 20, 2017 will open their homes for a total of six programs to season subscribers/members for an intimate, “salon-style” concert experience. Programs will feature several returning performing members and two Thursday Musical debuts by pianist Otto Loehrke (Oct. 20) and mezzo-soprano April Hansen (Apr. 20). THURSDAY MORNING ARTIST SERIES
The Thursday Morning Artist Series has been presented since 1892 at 10:30 am on Thursdays. It is the organization’s longest-running recital and chamber music series with a legacy of featuring some of the most talented classical musicians in Minnesota. Programs are currently being held in the acoustically impressive Antonello Hall at MacPhail Center for Music, Minneapolis. Complimentary coffee and donuts are provided in the lobby starting at 10:00 am served by members of Thursday Musical. Detailed program information will be announced throughout the season.
Kicking off the season is a free concert on October 6 including a preconcert reception at 9:30 am and Living Concerts Notes hosted by Guest Moderator MPR announcer Steve Staurch.
On the program will be Amy Morris, flute, the Başgöze – Pinto Piano Duo (Susana Pinto, piano and Pinar Başgöze, piano), and a clarinet trio: Janet Greene, Pat O'Keefe, and Nina Olsen.
Amy Morris has an eclectic career encompassing orchestral and chamber music performing and teaching. She is the second flutist with the Minnesota Opera Orchestra, with which she has played since 1997. Amy has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra, Omaha Symphony, Mankato Symphony, Sarasota Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Rome Festival Orchestra, Cedar Rapids Symphony, and the American Wind Symphony. Amy is a founding member of the Prairie Song Project, Indånde trio, and Second Winds. Amy has commissioned and performed music around the US and Europe. She is the flute instructor at Hamline and St. Catherine Universities in St. Paul. She holds performance degrees from The University of Iowa (BM) as a student of Betty Bang and Roger Mather and Northwestern University (MM) as a student of Walfrid Kujala.
The Başgöze – Pinto Piano Duo (Susana Pinto and Pınar Başgöze) has received significant acclaims, being described as: “wholly unified,” “musically captivating,” “technically powerful,” and “passionate.” A native of Lisbon, Portugal, Susana Pinto is currently on piano faculty at MacPhail Center for Music, and a DMA candidate in piano performance and pedagogy at the University of Iowa. She received her BA in piano performance at the Escola Superior de Musica de Lisboa under the tutelage of Tania Achot and her MA in piano performance and pedagogy from Central Michigan University. Pinar Başgöze, a native of Ankara, Turkey, received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in piano performance under the tutelage of Professor Banu Perk at Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory in Turkey, studied piano pedagogy and performance with Professor Maria Curcio in London, and piano performance with Dr. Paul Shaw at the University of Minnesota School of Music. She is currently on faculty at MacPhail Center for Music.
Janet Greene is a professional clarinetist in Minneapolis/Saint Paul and an Associate Professor of Music at Hamline. At Hamline she teaches clarinet, music theory and musicianship, conducts the wind ensemble, and oversees the wind and percussion program. Since coming to Minnesota in 1998, Greene has performed as a guest musician with the Minnesota Orchestra, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Hill House Chamber Players and the Musical Offering. She performs in recital on both the modern instrument and an 18th-century reproduction clarinet. Prior to this Greene lived and worked as a freelance musician in New York City, performing with a variety of groups including the New York City Opera, American Philharmonic, Village Light Opera, St. Patrick’s Cathedral Orchestra and the Microtonal Music Festival. She received her education and professional training at Smith College, the Manhattan School of Music and Rutgers University. From 1996 to 1998 Dr. Greene taught at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, and for fifteen summers was on faculty at the Kinhaven Music School in Weston, Vermont.
Clarinetist Nina Olsen has been a member of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra since 1990, and Is a founding member of the Second Winds Chamber ensemble. Olsen is a frequent performer on faculty recitals at Carleton and MacPhail and performs regularly with Thursday Musical. As a freelance performer, she has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra, Minnesota Sinfonia Sinfonia, Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and Plymouth Music Series (Vocalessence). Currently on the faculties of Carleton College and the MacPhail Center for Music, Olsen has also served on the faculties of St. Cloud State University and St. Olaf College. Olsen holds degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and the University of Denver. Her principal teachers include Burt Hara, John Anderson, Fred Ormand and Ramon Kireilis and Bil Jackson.
Pat O'Keefe is a multifaceted performer who is active and in demand in a wide variety of musical styles and genres. He has performed as a soloist with symphony orchestras and wind ensembles, wailed away for belly dancers, and rocked samba in the streets. He draws upon this multiplicity of experiences and interests in his performances, which employ a "superb control of extended techniques," and have been described as "passionate," "explosive," and "breath-stoppingly exquisite." He is currently the woodwind player for the new music ensemble Zeitgeist, based in St. Paul, Minnesota. He has also performed and recorded with such groups as ETHEL, California E.A.R. Unit, and Cleveland New Music Associates. Pat is also drawn to the music of other cultures, and has studied Brazilian, Turkish, and Korean music with acknowledged masters. He performs regularly on both woodwinds and percussion with the groups Batucada do Norte, Choro Borealis, and Music Mundial in the Twin Cities. Pat holds a BM (with Performer’s Certificate) from Indiana University, an MM (with Academic Honors and Distinction in Performance) from the New England Conservatory, and a DMA from the University of California, San Diego. He has received grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, and in 2015 he was awarded a Performing Musician Fellowship from the McKnight Foundation. He currently teaches at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls.
LIVING CONCERT NOTES
On October 6, 2016 and March 2, 2017, the Thursday Morning Artist Series will feature Living Concert Notes. Guest moderators - MPR announcer Steve Staruch and composer David Evan Thomas - will interview musicians about the music that they will be performing.
Steve Staruch is an announcer on Classical Minnesota Public Radio. Previously, he has hosted a number of programs on WCAL, including a weeknight program of sacred and contemplative music. As an accomplished musician, Staruch has performed as a violinist with the Lyra Baroque Orchestra and chamber ensemble WolfGang and as a tenor with the Dale Warland Singers. Staruch enjoys early music, the Baroque era, and the works of several living composers.
The March 2 Thursday Morning Artist Series Francophile Concert: French composers and those inspired by France, will be moderated by David Evan Thomas who will interview Deanne Mohr, piano, Colleen Batty, mezzo-soprano, and Will Richardson, cello.
The music of David Evan Thomas has been praised for its eloquence, power and craft. A two-time McKnight Foundation Fellow, he has also received awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the American Guild of Organists. Thomas has received commissions from the Minnesota Orchestra, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, The Schubert Club and the American Composers Forum. Thomas's music is published by ECS, Augsburg Fortress and MorningStar, and has been performed by the Minnesota Orchestra, London’s Westminster Cathedral Choir and the trio of Gil Shaham, Truls Mørk and Yefim Bronfman. He has served as composer-in-residence with Westminster Presbyterian Church (Minneapolis), the Cathedral of Saint Paul, and from 1997-2005, The Schubert Club. Born in Rochester, New York, David Evan Thomas studied at Northwestern University, the Eastman School, and with Dominick Argento at the University of Minnesota.

Concert Memberships for the 2016-17 concert season are now available to renewing and new subscribers. Thursday Musical continues its legacy of providing outstanding concert programming at affordable prices. Subscribers can access 12 Thursday Morning Artist Series concerts and 4 Home Programs for under $8 each ($95 general\$85 seniors). (Note: Home Programs are only available to season subscribers.) Subscriptions can be purchased online, by phone or in person at any Thursday Morning Artist Series concert.
